I strongly urge you to see economist Erik Anderson demonstrate how the Campbell government is deliberately bankrupting BC Hydro!

Victoria Community TV Presents:

Face to Face with Big Trouble at BC Hydro

Retired economist Erik Anderson discusses a troubling and possibly sinister financial situation at BC Hydro. And he asks: Is BC Hydro being put in financial jeopardy in order to privatize it? This is shocking and almost unbelievable stuff and must be seen by all. Once again we see the Media and the NDP silent, the government corrupt, and our future being put at great risk. The stage is being set for
something that may make the BC Rail fraud look small. Continue Reading »

Let me explain what I mean by a third political force in BC politics.

Today there are two forces, the Right represented by the Liberals and the Left by the NDP. I do not consider either the Green party or the Conservatives as political forces now or in the foreseeable future. This revelation always makes the Greens unhappy unto tears but when you’ve spent 25 years trying to elect even one MLA you should expert to be seen as a non player. The Conservatives, now down to Christianity and Right to Life, are to me, clearly not a serious factor. Continue Reading »

What a week even by BC political “standards”!

People are saying that the legislature is dysfunctional but that’s been the case for decades. Our system makes party discipline and rule by the premier’s office a certainty. What demonstrates this point is just what is going on – a wounded unto death premier means a dysfunctional government since he is the government.

What makes this point is this question – if Premier Pinocchio is one half as bad as Bill Bennett says why haven’t caucus and cabinet made this clear? Why would any cabinet minister endure this? Why would a lowly backbencher not get fed up and cross the floor? Not one has done this in nearly 10 years! Indeed, any dissent has to be read into the resignation of Carole Taylor and that two cabinet ministers elected not to run again. This is pretty thin gruel to work with when trying to test the temper, literally, of the government! Continue Reading »

This story was in the Nelson Post for November 15:

BC Hydro and AXOR, the company behind the Glacier/Howser power project, no longer have a power purchase agreement. Just what that means for the controversial hydroelectric generating project is unclear, but the Nelson-Creston MLA says it’s “great news.”

Michelle Mungall, MLA for the Nelson-Creston riding, says she heard the news after she received a copy of an email from a source. The email, sent by a BC Hydro employee, reads: “‘BC Hydro no longer has an electricity purchase agreement with AXOR for the Glacier/Howser project,’” says Mungall, reading directly from the email sent on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010.

When I first read the story I was tempted to defy my age, bad knees, and avoirdupois and do some handsprings! For if the story is true, this is a huge decision and is bound to have a serious ripple effect throughout the province. But it quickly dawned on me that  there must me much more to the story than meets the eyes.  Read full article at The Common Sense Canadian: Glacier-Howser Contract Cancellation Highlights Important Fish Values

Press hypocrisy

“We know no spectacle so ridiculous,” wrote Macaulay some 175 years ago, “as the British public in one of its periodical fits of morality” …

Let’s change that to substitute “captive columnists” for “British public” and now take a look at the recent writings of Mike Smyth of The Province and Vaughn Palmer of the Sun. It’s now OK, I gather, to let Gordon “Pinocchio” Campbell have it with both barrels. Like religious converts, they have seen the light and are prepared to atone for their errors by piling on Campbell when he’s down for the count. Continue Reading »

The Liberal leadership convention next February 26th is shaping up as an Old Boys and Girls rally. As outsiders, Carole Taylor and Diane Watts have counted themselves out. As with all leadership contests, especially those where the winner instantly becomes premier or prime minister, this one will have a lot of media coverage. That won’t mean much, however, unless the winner carries enough buzz with him/her to make a difference with the public.

Whoever wins will be a factor just because it isn’t Gordon Campbell. And this raises an interesting situation It was a former NDP cabinet minister and leadership hopeful who said, in a recent speech, that when you have demonized an opponent you run the serious risk that when that leader is gone, what voters were mad at is gone and then the public is giving the party the benefit of a sort of “new pitcher, new strikes” situation. Arrests without warrants

It’s about time we reformed our legal system . hell, it’s been around for 1000 years or so and we still have lots of crime, don’t we?

The bottom line of our system has been the presumption of innocence ignoring the reality that if you get arrested, you must be guilty. Policemen are well trained, unfailingly honest, and meticulous in their investigations. As our Moms and Dads told us, the policeman is our friend. Continue Reading »

I’m off to Dave Barrett’s party celebrating his 80th birthday and have been mildly concerned as to how to answer the question, what the hell’s an old Socred doing at a party for Dave Barrett?

My answer is simple – I saw Barrett, up close and as a partisan saw nothing good; I now see him from a distance and appreciate some of his positive and permanent legacies.

I like and admire Carole James. Where I couldn’t even sit in caucus of a government led by Gordon Campbell, I would have no qualms supporting a Premier James. As best I can judge, I would be comfortable supporting Diane Watts. Continue Reading »

There could not have been a worse government for the environment than the Campbell Liberals. On every possible front – farmland protection, fish farm disasters, the sale of our rivers and bankrupting BC Hydro, the total lack of environmental enforcement…It behooves us to examine the candidates very carefully and, in my opinion, rule out anyone who’s been in the Campbell Cabinet.
